Teachers Information

Purpose: The purpose of this site is to introduce high school students to the concept of script writing. It is aimed at around year 8 to 9 work level. As they work through the webquest they are required to work through the different structural parts of play writing which they will encounter as they progress through the high school drama curriculum. The end task requires them to take all of the notes and knowledge which they have collected throughout the quest and cohesively combine it together to create their own original script.

Learning Aims: This Webquest aims to get younger level secondary student (year 8 and 9) to become familiar with both the creative and the structured side of script writing. It aims to develop their ability to choose relevant information out of web pages and videos, as well as developing their note taking skills at the same time. It also influences higher learning but making the students combine the notes they have taken from text and visual media to create their own original work. In this case they take the notes they have taken and write their own play.

How to Use the Site: To go through the webquest simply work through each of the tabs down the side of the page in succession, starting at Storyline and progressing through to The Final Product. The Reference page onward are not part of the task.

Storyline: Students are required to read through the information on the web page link provided and take notes on how a stroryline is necessary and how it can affect a play. They are then required to come up ith a storyline of their own about part of their regular school day.

Title: Students are simply required to come up with a suitable title for their play.

Set:  Students are asked to read through the opening set description of a play and take notes on what is included in the description, how detailed it is, and why it is effective. They are then asked to write an opening set description for their play.

Example of a Script: Students are provided to a link which is an example of the type of play format that they will be required to write in at the end of the webquest. They are asked to take notes on different aspects of the play, paying close attention to how the dialogue and stage directions are laid out.

Dialogue: Students are asked to watch a video about the importance of dialogue in a play, and how it can be used effectively. They are then asked to come up with some dialogue for their own play (if it is just a few sentences or lines it's not a problem, they will later be asked to elaborate on it).

Stage Directions:  Students are required to watch a video clip about how to use stage directions effectively. They are then to read the information suplied on how to lay out stage directions within a play. After this they are encouraged to write some stage directions in with the dialogue they had written previously.

The Final Product: This is the last page of the task. This page is different to the others as it asks students to consolidate the information they have already obtained and put it together to create their own work. It requires students to write their own script about their regular school day whilst adhering to the guidelines provided.

Possible Assessment use: If you wish to incorporate this task into your assessment schedule then you can change the page and act limit in the 'Putting it All Together' page to make it as long as you wish for your assessment.
